Teachers have an important responsibility to society. A variety quantity of qualities is required for a good performance in this career. A certain level of intellectualism and humanism is essential because teachers work with knowledge and also with humans. Teacher´s job is so different from other professions. We have to be artist and scientists at the same time. Artist, when we interact to the educational community, I mean, colleagues, bosses, students and parents because we have to understand human conditions and to be as comprehensive as the context requires it. Scientist, when we develop learning skills, and abilities to empower knowledge. It is not the same thing working on machines, building houses and avenues.  The social functions of teachers are very relevant. We all know that we are on charge of building bases in the society. A hero personality is a requisite when problematic situations come up because you cannot get lots of money being a teacher but you can be an extremely happy person if you develop this career with passion and love. What are you reasons to work as a teacher? What is required to become a high quality teacher?

  1. Working as a teacher has always been a constant challenge. One of the first things you have to do is that your preparation depends not only on what you know, but also on what you have to investigate. And this is precisely what is exciting, the possibility of leaving the comfort zone and investigate with semiotic and ethical observations that allow you to dimension a new horizon to facilitate the journey of knowing, learning and daily challenges. Every day a special function is fulfilled, often it is not only teaching and learning, but also being can happen. And there, as you say Angela, an interaction happens beyond the signs of language, something happens empathy, altruism and understanding take place. And it can be said that the latter does not appear in any curriculum, nor in any guiding text; it is an invisible formation, and gravitates to the deepest feelings that emerge when there is an idea, a reason to share. For this reason, we not only live in learning, but also in creativity, in the breaking of schemes, because knowledge becomes secondary when there is altruism for the other, when I joyfully see the development of others.Como dice (Morín, 1999) “Interrogar nuestra condición humana, es entonces interrogar primero nuestra situación en el mundo. Una afluencia de conocimientos a finales del siglo XX permite aclarar de un modo completamente nuevo la situación del ser humano en el universo”.Consequently, it is the human condition that unfolds the complexity of the teaching work, if it is to be called labor. Finally, I can say that being an educator means facing the challenges, getting to know oneself, investigating and being part of an interpersonal world where the individual and his or her fellows are dimensioned.

    1. I think that one the most meaningful aspects to become a great teacher is to be conscious that we are forming human beings or people who are going to give the face for this country. That is why this one of the biggest reasons to work as a teacher, and this must be our rewarding every single day to know that our role as teachers is relevant to take students always one step ahead. Assuming some definitions related to ethics made by Keung (2000), where he states ethics as moral principles and standards embedded in individual behaviors while Beu and Buckley (2004) define it as legal and moral judgments adopted by large masses and used in decision-making. Analyzing these definitions we can answer Angela´s second question, it means we become a high quality teacher when we consider this profession like something serious and we give to our students with respect. From this point of view we are a high quality teacher.

    2. Carlos, we both share a perspective about how challenging is the development of the learning process as educators. It is a creative activity where it is necessary to combine a set of abilities related to human interaction to encourage de acquisition of skills, capabilities and knowledge. One of those requirements of being teachers in empathy, as Carl Roger said once, “Being listened to by someone who understand makes it possible for persons who to listen more accurately to themselves, with greater empathy toward their own visceral experiencing, their own vaguely felt meanings”. It is fact, the relevant of building a culture of empathy where we can understand and listen each other’s without judgment or intimidation.

  2. Honestly, I am a teacher because I did not have a good accompaniment in my school. That is, my teachers did not give me the necessary advice with which they could help me choose what I liked. I completely ignored everything about the universities and what each profession was. I always saw my father working as a teacher and I guess that was my first motivation. So I do not want to say that I do not feel good as a teacher. Quite the opposite, little by little in college I learned the meaning of being a teacher and the great responsibility that that means. Already in practice, the work is more intense but being able to interact with that children and adolescents is fantastic. The teacher has the opportunity to know a lot of stories that form as a human being and at the same time can help all those students not only academically also personally. People in general think that the teacher is the person in charge of teaching different knowledge so that the students are more competitive. Therefore, Taking into account my experiences in the classroom, I believe that every day I learn from my students. I learn a lot from them. Every day they teach me how to work with them and what is the best way to share knowledge. But the best thing is that they do not realize all the tools and aids that they give me as a teacher every day.

  3. Thanks for your confession. I honestly think that I and other teachers are very romantic about the motivation to become teachers, the passion and vocation. However, the most important thing is to enjoy your job a do it in a very responsible manner.

  4. In an ideal world, ALL teachers should have the motivation and passion we have... However, you know that there is a huge number of teachers who are not intrinsically motivated to share knowledge and experiences with students... Moreover, there are many students who simply do not appreciate the efforts teachers do every day to develop contents in a creative way... So ATITTUDES are for me another matter of ethical issues at schools... So, how do you deal with negative atittudes from students or from others collegues???

  5. This profession is more a vocation than a job; we decided to continue training as specialists in ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING, because we want to improve our teaching and learning process. by the way, we know that we have the future of our country in our hands, we should recognize that in this case the most important thing is not only money, but our acknowledgements as human beings that contribute to the development of a better tomorrow in a responsible and ethical way.
